Case Study: Terrigal Pavilion – Incredible view with incredible acoustics

Sydney Acoustics is proud to showcase our recent collaboration at the stunning Terrigal Pavilion on the Central Coast. Working alongside Professional Construction Services and the visionary team at Fabric Architecture Studio Central Coast, we delivered a bespoke acoustic solution that blends seamlessly with the venue’s iconic architecture. This project highlights the critical role of technical sound management in creating premium hospitality spaces.

Project: Terrigal Pavilion – Central Coast

Main Contractor: Professional Construction Services

Designer: Fabric Architecture Studio Central Coast

Material: Autex 24mm VJ Groove in White

Installer: Sydney Acoustics

Problem

The design for the Terrigal Pavilion featured large volumes of glazing, terrazzo stone surfaces, and a high triangular pitched ceiling with exposed beams. While these elements are essential for a premium seaside atmosphere, they create a highly reflective environment, resulting in poor acoustics for clientele.

In the world of acoustics, hard surfaces cause sound to bounce, leading to excessive reverberation and uncomfortable noise where patrons must strain to be heard. Without intervention, the main bar area would have suffered from poor speech intelligibility, significantly detracting from the premium experience intended for the high class, yet beachy vibe venue.

Solution

To mitigate these challenges, Sydney Acoustics installed Autex 24mm VJ Groove in ‘White’ to the pitched ceiling. This product was specifically selected for its ability to mimic the traditional look of VJ timber panelling while providing superior sound absorption.

Installing 24mm panels on a pitched ceiling requires high-level precision to ensure the VJ grooves align perfectly across the architectural peaks and troughs. The choice of ‘White’ allowed the material to blend seamlessly with the palette established by Fabric Architecture Studio, providing a “hidden” acoustic treatment that preserved the venue’s airy, open feel.

Outcome

The result is a sophisticated social hub where sound is managed effectively despite the high volume and capacity of the space. The installation has significantly reduced background reverberation, creating optimal environments for clientele to enjoy long lunches and evening drinks without the onset of acoustic fatigue.

The Importance of Designing in Acoustics

Designing in acoustics for restaurant projects is no longer an optional luxury; it is a fundamental requirement for commercial success. A venue’s “vibe” is determined as much by what guests hear as what they see. By integrating high-performance materials like Autex VJ Groove during the construction phase, operators ensure that the acoustic comfort matches the quality of the food and service. For the Terrigal Pavilion, this investment in sound management ensures a welcoming atmosphere that encourages patrons to stay longer and return often.
